Shockwave Therapy Belfast

There has never been a more effective treatment for tendon and soft tissue injuries. The treatment has previously only been available to professional, elite sporting organisations but now has found a new home at Belfast’s Sports Injury Centre. This investment backs up our promise to provide our patients with the latest, most innovative technology which will be combined with our usual ‘hands on’ approach.

What is Shockwave Therapy and how does it work?

Compressed air is used to generate kinetic energy from a projectile located in the handset of the machine. This kinetic energy translates into sound energy in the form of an acoustic wave as it passes from the handset into the tissue being treated. These acoustic waves stimulate increased blood flow and metabolic activity within the cell…this means increased tissue healing and decreased pain.

What injuries does it treat?

Myofascial trigger points – a localised painful area within the muscle like a knot which causes pain and restricted movement or function.
Tendonopathies – This includes any tendon injuries such as:
– Rotator cuff including calcific tendonitis
– Tennis elbow / golfers elbow
– Achillies tendon injury
– Patellar tendon
– Plantar fasciitis
To activate muscle and connective tissue – This will help to increase circulation and increase the healing rate which is why it’s so widely used within professional sports teams.

Is it safe to use?

There are very few side effects to using shockwave therapy and its use is backed up by research which is why NICE recommend its use for the conditions mentioned. We will be happy to provide you with copies of the research and as always a full assessment will be conducted prior to treatment to make sure you are a suitable candidate.
